Oswald reworks the condensed sans serifs sold as Alternate Gothic, redrawn to fit the pixel grid of screens. Vernon Adams released it in 2011 and kept refining it until 2014, adding weights, more Latin and Cyrillic languages and tighter spacing based on feedback from users. Kalapi Gajjar later finished the Latin update, and the family now also covers Vietnamese.
The ZIP holds four static styles: Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold. The original variable font also goes lighter, down to ExtraLight. There are no italics.
Narrow letters fit more words into a headline, button or menu bar, which makes Oswald a good choice for news headlines, sports graphics, menus and sign-like layouts. Set labels in uppercase with a little letter-spacing, and longer headings in sentence case. For body text, pair it with a serif like Lora or a neutral sans like Inter. For a heavier, tighter poster headline, try Anton.
